Full Sail University for Music and Media Production
If there is one thing good thing that has come from the consolidation of the music industry over the past decade and a half, it’s that the people running the music business have become more business-minded. And regardless of what the nay-sayers will say, this is a good thing for the artists, the consumer and the lucky few who have carved out a career for themselves in music. What I like about the program at Full Sail is that it pays attention to the business side of music as well as the fun stuff like artist management and the history of rock’n'roll in it’s Entertainment Business Bachelor of Science degree.
The days of being able to place yourself at the top of the music industry heap with just a good ear and a long track record in radio and/or promotions, is not the norm any longer. Even record label internships, which you used to be able to get just by asking, it seems, require you to be in college so you can get credit. So instead of suffering through a degree program you have no passion for, check out something like Full Sail. I think you might be pleased by what they have to offer.

The Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business
There are a couple of real gems in the world of formal music business education, if there even is such a thing. Mike Curb, of Curb Records founded one such school. I’ve heard a lot about them over the years and they seem to do some really great stuff with their graduates unlike some of the half-billion broadcasting schools out there. If you’re serious about getting a job in the music business and WANT to get a degree specifically in this area. Curb’s school is just about as good as it’ll get. Just two of their alums are names you might recognize if you’re paying attention. . .how about Lee Ann Womack and (ahem. . ) Trisha Yearwood. Ever heard of ‘em?? My friend Steve Leeds teaches there. . .tell him Doc Kane sent you and check out The Mike Curb School of Business at Belmont University.
Southern Illinois University’s Music Business Program
(my Alma Mater!!)
My alma mater’s program is a nice option for those of you that don’t want to spend a small fortune to get an education and want do it in a great part of the country as well. Beautiful campus, knowledgeable professors and a great Hollywood Program as well that’ll get you goin’ if you’re into the film side of things. Internships aren’t too tough to come by in these programs and they were both somewhat pioneering programs if ya’ ask me. And well, heck, I made it out with the degree and have done pretty darn well for myself. Maybe you should check ‘em out. Oh, did I mention they have the best damn pizza in the world out there at Quatro’s in town? Ask for Phil Brown and tell him I sent ‘ya!Southern Illinois University’s Music Business Program.
Berklee School of Music’s Music Business/Management Major
While I tell most visitors to my page that a degree in music business is not at all required for entry in the biz, pursuing a degree of some sort is almost necessary in order to gain a high quality internship with a label or management company. Berklee is extremely well known nationally as a great school for both musician’s and musician’s helpers. Given their massive contacts in the business arena though, anyone with even a passing interest in performing or working with musicians should give these guys a look see.Berklee School of Music’s Music Business/Management Major.
